Two-storey rear extension, Lymm

A contemporary two-storey extension was designed to extend this detached Victorian dwelling in Lymm. A choice of mostly timber cladded facades and a very limited space resulted in a decision to plan the new addition as a timber frame construction.

On the ground floor it accommodates a family room with a log burner that has been opened up to the existing kitchen and dining room. Internal steps ensure seamless connection to the outside space. The new ground floor layout also provides a small cloaks and a downstairs WC accessible from the main hallway. On the first floor, an en-suite to the master bedroom has been created together with an additional guest bedroom.

The contemporary form of simple volumes, and clean and streamlined appearance was chosen to enhance the existing Victorian dwelling and not to detract from its original shape and presence. The new proposed structures and facades of large glazing elements and timber cladding were designed to be distinct and to complement the historical form and appearance of the original dwelling.
